Kim Min-seok won the bronze medal in men's 1,500-m speed skating at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang on Tuesday with a time of 1:44.93.

The performance came as a surprise as he became the first Korean and Asian to win an Olympic medal in the discipline.

Previously, Mo Tae-bum had the best showing among Koreans with a fifth-place finish in Vancouver in 2010.

Kjeld Nuis of the Netherlands won the gold medal with 1:44.01, and his fellow countryman Patrick Roest won the silver medal with 1:44.86, continuing Dutch dominance on the long track.

The Korean trio of Kim, Lee Seung-hoon, and Chung Jae-won will now go for gold against the Dutch team led by Sven Kramer in team pursuit. The preliminary round takes place on Sunday, with the final next Wednesday.
