Speed Skater Lee Sang-hwa to Skip 1,000-m Race

Speed skater Lee Sang-hwa will skip the women's 1,000-m race at the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang on Wednesday to focus on her main 500-m event on Sunday.

The two-time Olympic champion is aiming for her third gold medal in the 500-m event. She used to compete in both events, but she apparently wants to keep in good form for the 500-m race as the shorter race comes later this time than it did in the past.

Lee will face her archrival Nao Kodaira of Japan, who is currently ranked No. 1 in the world. Kodaira set the world record for the women's 1,000-m race in December.

Meanwhile, Korea will still be represented on Wednesday, with Park Seung-hi and Kim Hyun-yung competing in the 1,000-m race.
